Familie is one of the safest beginner nouns, but good German comes from the phrases around it. Meine Familie, in meiner Familie, mit der Familie, and eine Familie gründen are more useful than family alone.
German often uses Familie where English may say family members or relatives. If the sentence focuses on the people as a group, Familie is natural. If you need individual relatives, use Familienmitglieder or names such as Mutter, Bruder, Cousine.
Do not overextend Familie to every English family phrase. A host family is Gastfamilie, a family name is Familienname, and a product family may need Produktfamilie only in technical language.
